Year 6
Welcome to Year 6 at The Grove Junior School
Year 6 is a significant and exciting year, full of opportunities for learning, leadership, and preparation for secondary school. Pupils study a rich and varied curriculum, including topics such as South America, migration, WW1 and WW2, Windrush, and world religions. Creative subjects like art and design focus on Fauvism, collage, printing, sewing, and electrical circuits. In English, children explore a wide range of texts including The Explorer, Goodnight Mr Tom, Windrush Child, The Highwayman, and poetry by Benjamin Zephaniah.
Children are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for their learning and organisation as they get prepared for secondary school. Homework includes daily reading, weekly spelling practice, and Mathletics activities, with house points awarded for timely completion. PE takes place twice a week, and pupils should bring spare trainers and a waterproof jacket. Trips and enrichment activities include Mill on the Brue, Whipsnade Zoo, a WW1/2 day, and a migration field study, with an end-of-year treat to celebrate their achievements.

Year 6 also includes preparation for SATs, which take place in May. Pupils take part in mock assessments and bespoke focus groups to support their progress, with breakfast club available during SATs week. Assessments cover reading, SPAG, maths, writing, and science, and are used to help children reach their full potential. Year 6 is a time for building resilience, celebrating success, and making lasting memories.
In Year 6, children are chosen as Sports Leaders and Play Leaders. There are also opportunities to represent the school in many sport competitions, as well as Online Safety Ambassadors.

It's Muddy Season! Please remember to send a spare pair of shoes to school. The children can keep them in school if they like but they need a spare pair to change into on PE days so we don't track too much mud into school. Thank you.
