Year 5
Welcome to Year 5 at The Grove Junior School
Year 5 is a year of deepening knowledge, growing independence, and exciting learning opportunities. Pupils explore a wide-ranging curriculum that includes English, maths, science, history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, French, and PSHE. This term, children will be reading engaging texts such as Tales from Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan and Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman, while also learning to write creatively and develop poetic structure through cinquain poems.
In maths, children will focus on place value, rounding, negative numbers, decimals, multiplication, division, and 3D shapes. Science topics include forces and the solar system, helping children understand how day, night, and seasons occur. History lessons will explore the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, while geography will involve map work and creating contour maps. Art will be inspired by Frank Auerbach, and DT will focus on food technology and seasonal cooking. Computing lessons will cover online safety, game creation, and spreadsheets. Music includes composing and performing, and French lessons will build vocabulary around greetings and school subjects.
Children are encouraged to read regularly at home, practise spellings, and complete weekly homework on platforms like Mathletics. PE takes place twice a week. Year 5 is a time for building resilience, responsibility, and respect, our key values that underpin everything we do at The Grove.

It's Muddy Season! Please remember to send a spare pair of shoes to school. The children can keep them in school if they like but they need a spare pair to change into on PE days so we don't track too much mud into school. Thank you.
