English at The Grove Junior School

At The Grove Junior School, we believe that English is the foundation for all learning. Our curriculum is designed to help children become confident communicators, through speaking, reading, and writing, so they can thrive both academically and personally.

We place a strong emphasis on reading for pleasure and purpose, guiding pupils from learning to read to reading to learn. High-quality texts are central to our approach, helping children explore diverse ideas, cultures, and experiences. Whole-class reading sessions ensure all pupils engage with rich literature, while independent reading and a well-stocked library nurture personal interests and a lifelong love of books.

In writing, we follow a structured teaching sequence that builds from reading high-quality models to developing grammar skills and producing independent work. Pupils learn to write clearly and creatively for a range of audiences and purposes, with regular opportunities to edit, publish, and perform their work.

Spelling and handwriting are taught explicitly, with a focus on fluency, accuracy, and pride in presentation. We use the HfL Essential Spellings programme and the Letter-Join scheme to support consistent progress across KS2.

Our curriculum is inclusive and responsive. Through regular assessment and moderation, we ensure every child receives the support they need to succeed. Whether through phonics interventions, 1:1 reading, or tailored writing support, we are committed to helping all pupils become effective communicators ready for secondary school and beyond.
