Autumn Music Concert 2016

By Mia and Lenny

This year, our Autumn Music Concert took on a ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ theme with the orchestra performing a tantalizing Tango and a cheeky Cha-cha-cha. Firstly, the orchestra performed together with Mrs Bull playing the piano, and then each section of the orchestra played on their own so that the parents could hear their own children playing. We heard flutes, violins, oboe, clarinets, trumpets, tenor horn and saxophones. The audience loved it!

We were also entertained by the two school recorder groups. Mrs Myer’s group performed first and impressed us all by playing in two parts. After this came Mrs Rigarlsford’s advanced recorder group. They were joined by Mrs Harrison and Mrs Myers and they performed some technically challenging music with style and confidence.

The choir were on good form and performed three songs, two with a Christmas flavour and the third was from the Young Voices 2017 programme, and some parents from the Community Choir sang with us. The choir showed their skill in varying dynamics and pitch; they leant forward to almost whisper the last line of ‘Midnight,’ and then at the end of ‘The Echo Carol,’ they managed to produce a very high note, in fact, it was a top G!

The year 6 instrumentalists were exceptional. It is unusual to get parents to perform with us, but Beth Santus performed ‘The Rocking Carol’ with her dad. She played the cornet and he played the tuba. The sounds blended beautifully. All of the soloists played brilliantly, but the surprise of the evening came when Ben Sweeney played his own composition on the piano. We were all shocked because no one knew he could play the piano! His performance, and his piece were amazing.

The evening was a great success.

World Games Day

On Friday 10th June, six children from the school participated in the annual World Games Day held at Oaklands College in St Albans.  The children, from year 4 and 6, took part in a variety of Olympic events ranging from fencing and athletics, to Rio carnival dancing!  They also met local athlete Kyle Langford, had the opportunity to hold a real Olympic torch, and were awarded prizes for winning the Olympic Quiz! As usual, the behaviour of the children was exemplary and I was extremely proud of them all.  Mrs Wilding
