Year 5

Welcome to Year 5 Summer Term 2017

Welcome to the new term.  This page is to give you an overview of the term ahead and includes links to websites to support children’s learning.

This term we will be celebrating our hard work with the Oscars evening.

In English for the first few weeks, we will be creating reports in the form of an information text linked to the Vikings and Anglo Saxons.

Following on from this, we will be writing persuasively and holding debates about current issues.

After half term, we will be carrying out an author study exploring the life and work of Michael Morpurgo across different genres.

In Mathematics we will cover work linked to number, shape, data handling and measures as well as working on the children’s mental strategies and investigative skills.  We would be grateful if you could continue to assist your child with practising their times tables and associated division facts.

There are games to support their learning on ‘My Maths’, as well as ‘Manga High’. ‘Hit the button’ has several interactive activities for practising times tables as well as division facts.

We will continue investigating forces by carrying out a number of practical investigations before moving on to look at the life cycle of humans, animals and plants.

ICT will be used to support the whole curriculum over the year. The children will be becoming digital artists for the ‘We are artists’ unit in computing.

We will be ICT resources to create digital pictures.

The focus for the first half term will be on Music from the Movies to link with the Oscars.

Our units for this term will be ‘En vacance’; discussing holidays and expressing opinions, and ‘Chez moi’ when the children will be describing and naming rooms in their houses as well as learning about a typical French home.

In R.E. we will be exploring the Jewish festival of Passover and creating our own version of a Seder plate. The children will also be reflecting upon their own beliefs and celebrations.

For P.E. the children need to remember to bring in a complete kit, including suitable footwear as borrowing clothes will no longer be permitted. Also, as the weather improves, please make sure your child has hat to protect them from the sun.  We will be learning the skills involved with athletics and rounders.

Home Learning

The children will continue to have a fortnightly Learning Log, alternated with Maths or English which will be sent home on a Thursday and returned to school the following Wednesday. Your child’s planner will be checked weekly but please remind your child to hand it in if it contains any messages from home. In their planners, children are expected to have written three entries reflecting upon their reading.  Please ensure that the planners are signed each week.

As you can see we have an exciting term planned.  We hope the children will enjoy the challenges ahead of them!
